Google Android Beating Symbian

Symbian has been dismissive of Google Android, as well as smaller upstarts like the LiMo Foundation, arguing that the latter is overly focused on middleware for wireless operators and the former is fake open source with more hype than substance.

All of which might be true, but the reality is that it seems to be working for Android. Google has been signing new handset manufacturers at a frenetic pace, while Symbian has been holding steady with Nokia...and that's about it.  Despite Symbian announcing new handsets, Google is actually shipping Android. There's a big difference between marketing and reality. Google Android offers the latter

For all the buzz that Android gets from developers, its success owes more to handset manufacturers than to open-source developers. Handset manufacturers and wireless carriers are hungry for alternatives to surging Apple and declining Microsoft. And while others may not be seeing source code in copious amounts, handset manufacturers are apparently getting their fill.

More than this, though, Google gives them a safe, consumer-friendly brand. Symbian does not. This is the reason Google Android is winning. It's not about developers--at least, not yet. Neither Symbian nor Android really offers developers open communities and open code. No, the difference today is brand. Google has it. Symbian does not, and that's despite decade-long dominance of the mobile market.

Symbian still has a ways to go. It has a weak user interface (UI) that is supposed to get better, but that describes much that is wrong with Symbian today. Everything (source code, revamped UI, and resumption of market dominance) is always spoken of in the future tense.

Meanwhile, Google Android rolls on--not because it out open-sources Symbian, but rather because it out-executes it.

Most Paid Android Apps Downloaded About 100 times:

It has been found that 20 per cent of all free apps and 80 per cent of all paid apps have been downloaded fewer than 100 times on the Google Android Market worldwide to date.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the scale, 96 apps have been downloaded more than 5 million times in the Android Market, with Google Maps achieving  50 million plus.

The report concluded that it is more difficult for apps on Android Market than Apple App Store to monetise using a one-off fee.

It said that only two paid apps have been downloaded more than half a million times in the Google store against six for iPhone.

And in the games space, there were five Android titles over 250,000 worldwide, and ten for iPhone in the US alone in two months.

Some of this comes down to the dynamism of the charts. It seems that the refresh rate of top app charts is significantly higher in the Apple App Store.

In April, for example, 94 different apps figures in the iPhone top ten free or paid), but only 26 on Android.

Here are the percentages of Android apps that have achieved certain download.

Study finds about 99.7% of Android phone's

Android might look's like to a safe system, but the German University researchers of Ulm have discovered that using it on an open Wi-Fi network, leaves a hole open for impersonation attacks. Which devices are prone to the attack? 99.7% of Androids, or pretty much every device except for the few ones running on Android 2.3.4.

The researchers summed up their finding about whether it’s possible to launch an attack against Google services. “Yes, it is possible, and it is quite easy to do so. Further, the attack is not limited to Google Calendar and Contacts, but is theoretically feasible with all Google services using the Client Login authentication protocol for access to its data APIs.”

“For instance, the adversary can gain full access to the calendar, contacts information, or private web albums of the respective Google user. This means that the adversary can view, modify or delete any contacts, calendar events, or private pictures. This is not limited to items currently being synced but affects all items of that user.”

Luckily, it seems that the secure https protocol has been implemented for the calendar and contacts authentication in Android 2.3.4, but pictures synced through Picasa could still be a subject to the attack. To minimize the chance of having your data stolen, you could avoid using public open Wi-Fi networks or turn off automatic syncing from the Settings menu in your Android device.

Hopefully, Google will release a fix for the issue now as the research has been published, but in the meantime let us know your opinion. Is that a serious issue for you.

Android Market will take over Apple's App Store in August 2011

It's a strong possibility for Android Market to finally overtake Apple's mighty App Store by August 2011.
Distimo is the  first groups to predict the Android Market's overtake with another organisation, Germany-based research2guidance having information that complemented the original research stating that Android Market will overtake the App Store by August 2011, assuming it hits its target of 425,000 new apps by the start of the month. In April 2011, Android Market added 28,000 new applications to its ranks, whereas Apple's App Store only managed a comparatively small 11,000.
This is good news for Google in terms of offering a greater choice, but in the grand scheme of things, just how much does this affect anything? The majority of the apps on both stores go unnoticed with the 'cream usually rising to the top', quickly. And having the store with the most available apps does not mean the majority revenue, especially for developers.
The research conducted by research2guidance actually discounts this and sways towards the opposite, the idea that; "success of an app store is negatively correlated to the success of an average developer.
All analysis on the early months of an app store including the Android Market shows that average download numbers decrease dramatically after the first months or even weeks after the launch of the store. The long tail gets longer and longer while the top 5% gets richer and richer."
Also, one might argue that the majority of apps between both stores are geared toward different users. iOS and its apps, aimed at a premium market and as such, charge a premium for their services with Android going for a more mass-market approach.

Android Market to grow too large there App Store in this July

Latest analysis about Android application  store may surprise you – that Android Market is on its way to becoming the biggest application  Store as soon as this July, according to researchers from Distimo.

Update of this April by researcher's app report shows that the number of applications grew by a healthy 16% in the Market in comparison to the pale 6% growth of apps in the App Store for March. Distimo doesn't give further explanations, but assuming this turns into a trend, it will take five months for the Google's web store to take over Apple's rival.

However we would take this with a grain of salt as just recently a study showed developer sentiment leaned toward iOS as more programmers intended to launch applications on Apple's platform, while Android was a runner-up. Slower or faster, the gap between the two is closing. Actually, the Market already has more free apps: 134,342 against the 121,845 for iOS.

Google Documents as Android apps to Android Market

Finally it come's  true for the user's with release of Google Docs as an Android app. Now  Available in Android Market as a free download in English language for Android phones running 2.1+, Google Docs allows you to access all of your Google accounts documents. You can evenly  open your content while in Gmail. Search, star, edit, rename and of course, read your documents right on your mobile device. A widget is also available, which allows you to open your Google documents straight from your phone's home screen.

You can edit documents while on the go and share them straight from your Android handset. And with the app and the camera on your phone, photos with text can be turned into an editable Google document using optical character recognition. you can also create new documents from just snapped pictures and old shots from your gallery can be converted by sharing them with the app. Google's own blog notes that there are some limitations such as the inability of the app to read handwritten text or some fonts. But the Mountain View company did say to "stay tuned-things will get better over time."

Google Nexus S 4G

Google Nexus S 4G is officially set be release on  May 8th & contract price $200

It is Hard to believe, but it is true that Google Nexus S 4G is still one of the very few devices that’s expected to be running Android 2.3 Gingerbread from the onset, but thankfully, we’re now presented with an official date for its release.

At the end , Sprint came out to officially announce May 8th as the day when the handset will begin to go on sale through all Sprint channels. Even though some people might have been able to gobble up pre-orders of the device for some time now, there’s still going to be just a little bit of wait before they’re able to start playing around with this Google inspired smartphone. Obviously, you’ll need to shell out the usual $200 with your signature on a 2-year contract, but we’d imagine that some would easily pay the premium without much complaint considering the nature of the device.

With the Google Nexus S 4G arriving just before we’re poised to find ourselves in the simmering heat wave of summer.

HTC Scribe Android Honeycomb tablet to take on Motorola Xoom

SmartHouse reports that a Telstra executive told them "we have spoken to Peter Chou, CEO at HTC and he has told us that HTC is doing a tablet but they are concerned over its performance. They want to get it right. They have been working on a tablet for some time. You only have to look at what has happened to Toshiba and Viewsonic, they have rushed to launch tablets prior to Xmas in some markets only to face technical problems".
With HTC recently trademarking the name "Scribe" for a tablet device, could this possibly be the HTC Scribe tablet? And this also comes as good news for those in Australia as it looks like Telstra wants to bring the HTC Scribe down under. Being a GSM carrier, we can guess that the HTC Scribe and its 3G capability won't just be targeted at Verizon and Sprint's CDMA networks.
We will be there at CES 2011 next week so stay tuned as we bring the latest news on upcoming consumer electronics as they break cove

Android 3.0 Coming January 2011

Android 3.0 the latest software update for the popular mobile operating system owned by Google, is reportedly set to launch in January 2011. Phone and tablets running the operating system have experienced an enormous boom within the past years, leaving consumers and developers’ alike hungry for a new release of the Android operating system.

The newest version of the platform, which is code-named “Gingerbread,” is set to upgrade the existing OS in multiple ways, including new video capabilities and rumored features that incorporate Google TV.
The popular operating system is currently being run by mobile phones built by a variety of different companies, including Samsung, Acer, Motorola, and HTC. Furthermore, Android is now one of the most popular operating systems for new tablet devices. Presently, Google has yet to comment on its upcoming Gingerbread release, though the company has confirmed that the release will be occurring within the next few months. Many have speculated that such a release could be announced at the CES 2011 conference, at the beginning of January.
In spite of all the speculation, some of the features of the new version are widely known. One such addition is video chat, which will support the protocols used by Google Talk. Furthermore, the OS will have the ability to receive Google Talk calls over a Wi-Fi connection. Such features directly challenge similar features in the Apple iPhone 4.0, which was released this past summer.
Additional video capabilities in the new generation of devices include the capability to link the mobile phone with Google TV products. The new operating system will reportedly allow users to control such products with their phone, which essentially operates as a remote control. These rich video and chat features are expected to continue the accelerating market share of Android devices.
Beyond the popular features recognized by casual users of Smartphones and tablets running Google’s operating system, the new Android release is expected to incorporate several features that translate into a faster end-user experience. For example, the new software is reported to have enhanced CPU performance, meaning shorter response times for users. In general, the OS is expected to experience a boost in overall speed, and should offer more power in the hardware department.
